How to teach ow sound:
We are going to teach kids the ow sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:
1. sound ow story:
a little kid was playing on the beach with a bowl. he filled it with sand and started to build a tower. He put a towel on his shoulders to keep him dry after he had taken a long shower. His mom saw him and knew it’s time for breakfast. So she brought some bread with cheese and went to feed her child. “open your mouth little bunny,..” she said to her kid. Suddenly, something strange happened. A seagull flew so fast above them and got closer in a blink of an eye to steal the cookie bite going into the kid’s mouth. “ow….what is that”, said the mother after the bird has hurt her hand. “ow…I can’t believe the bird stole the cookie”, said the mother angrily.
- To make the “ow” digraph correctly, you need to pronounce two sounds and make a smooth connection between them.
- Start with making the “a” sound.
- Open your mouth as wide as possible. Relax your lips and allow them to rest in a neutral position.
- Flatten your tongue and place it very low in your mouth. The tip of your tongue should be touching the back of your bottom front teeth.
- Next, connect the /ɑ/ to the “w” sound.
- Smoothly move your jaw up, until your mouth is almost closed. Then pull the back of your tongue to your throat.
- The first sound in a diphthong is typically longer and louder. So, make sure that you pronounce a nice and full “a” and then connect it to the “w” sound.

Write on the board or on a piece of paper the following table of graphemes. Give the kid some oral words that can only be combined with available graphemes in the table. See how your kid will be able to form a word from.
