A /d/ Story: The Drum at the Door
It was the weekend of the family’s Disney trip, and everyone was dashing around packing bags. “D, d, d, d,” came a knock at the door. Danny ran to open it, grumbling at the noise. “Hello, sweetheart — did you miss your grandma?” she laughed, scooping him up for a hug. Dad just shook his head and grinned; the surprise had delayed them by a good ten minutes.
How the /d/ Sound Is Made
d is a voiced stop: the tip of your tongue taps the ridge just behind your top teeth, then releases while your voice is switched on, so your throat buzzes as you say it. Keep it short and crisp — d, not duh.
The Jolly Phonics action is to beat your hands up and down as if you are playing a drum, saying d, d, d with each beat. A simple cue song helps too: chant “d, d, d, beat the drum, d, d, d, here it comes” while tapping out the rhythm on your knees.
The sound most children confuse with d is t, its voiceless twin — dip and tip are made in exactly the same place in the mouth, but t has no voice. Have your child rest a hand on their throat: they should feel a buzz for dip but nothing for tip. On paper, d also gets mixed up with the mirror-image letters b and p; plenty of tracing practice is the best fix for that.

Watch out: the -ed ending on past-tense words is always spelled ed, but it is not always said as /d/. Played and cleaned really do end in /d/, but jumped ends in a /t/ sound and wanted adds a whole extra syllable. Listen with your child rather than guessing from the spelling.
Ways to spell it: at this stage d is almost always just the letter d, as in dog, dad, bed, and red, or doubled as dd in words like add and muddy.
