She said, “only one sound appears in these three words: cat, ant, apple, What is it?”. Danny thought for a minute. Finally, he said excitedly, “it’s /a/ sound”. It was right; Julia was the one who got embarrassed now LoL…..

the a letter makes two vowel sounds. the short a vowel as in the word ‘cat, hat and ant’, and the long a sound like in ‘make and bake’. Here, we are mainly interested in the short /a/ sound until we reach phase ‘4’ ,and ‘5’. we will start teaching the kid the different forms and sounds the letter or a combination of letters can make.

Once upon a time, Danny was playing with his toys. He was so happy, making his toy plane fly and fall when it hits a wall. His sister, Julia doesn’t like that, she wants to scare her young brother because he didn’t want to play hide and seek. She got a snake from her toys and started to sneak. She started making the sound of “Ssssssss” from behind the couch. Danny got freaking out and suddenly she throws her snake on his face…Danny screamed. Wow, Julia made him so scared. “next time you play with me”, Julia said.

The mouth is slightly stretched. Your upper and lower teeth are touching. The tongue is nearly close to the upper teeth. Push the air through to make the /sssss/ sound. /s/ sound is voiceless. There is no vibration made by the vocal cords to produce it. In the /z/ sound article we will notice how similar it is to the /s/ sound but it’s voiced which means that we make vibration by the vocal cords to produce it.

Maybe there are 26 letters in English alphabet but teaching sounds won’t depend on that in teaching digraphs or trigraphs. In this article, we talk about phase 2 sounds which are single letter sounds.

Phase 2 phonic sounds:

jolly phonics - phase 2

phase 2 contains 20 sound letters. These are single letters that can make one sound like It’s obvious in the chart some examples of the usage of these letters. This phase is not interested in teaching kids how to pronounce sounds that are formed by two or more letters. So, it’s more suitable for starters and kg1.

The cards are helpful in many activities that will boost kids learning of sounds. They are mainly designed for blending activities but we can use them solely to test the kid recognition for a single sound card.

So, if you are teaching the kid the /c/ sound for example. You can choose three cards including the /c/ sound and shuffle them and ask the kid which one is the /c/ sound. This game is greatly known and is so helpful. If the kid has taken some of the sounds including some vowels we can start asking him to blend the sound and pronounce the whole word. Usually, it will be three letters word (CVC).

The cards are also suitable for group work and higher learning levels. You can ask a group to form the word ‘cat’ after hearing it many times by the teacher. The groups that can recognize the sounds that form the word faster are the winners.

It might be confusing that sometimes we say that we are teaching the phonemes through this table:

Which is actually the table for graphemes.?!?!?!

So I guess there is a little confusion here for parents mainly in defining the relation between the phonemic sounds in this chart and the letters that present them. Phonemes and graphemes are totally different things.

Actually, this is the actual table for phonemes:

Yes, these are the phonemes. The word phoneme means the smallest unit of sound. For example, in the word cat, there are three phonemes /c/ /ae/ /t/. Alright, but what are these symbols above. Well, these are the phonemic symbols for these sounds. So, I think to teach a kid how to read correctly we will not teach him the phonemic symbols of sounds. Rather, graphemes are the middle solution for that.

What are graphemes?

The letter or group of letters make a phonemic sound. So, in the end, all the phonemic symbols above can be represented by letters and that is the idea of graphemes. 

So the phonemic sounds can be turned into graphemes like:

  • /t̬ʃ/ ======> as grapheme it will be /ch/ like chair.
  • /θ/ ======> as grapheme it will be /th/ like thin.
  • /ð/ ======> as grapheme it will be /th/ like this.

and so on…..

A grapheme is an easy way to learn reading for all ages.

How to teach kids reading and writing using graphemes?

Actually, graphemes are used to teach phonics to kids. There are many approaches that are popular in all the school systems universally. One of the most successful methodologies is jolly phonics which divides sounds into phases according to the difficulty and complexity of the sound. In kids activities we have presented an inclusive approach to teach all graphemes starting form:

  • 1 letter grapheme: t, s, a
  • 2 letters grapheme: st, ch, ck
  • 3 letter graphemes: str, igh, ear
  • 4 letter graphemes: ture, ight, tion, sure

In the following article, you will find a complete teaching strategy for reading and writing for kids. I will clarify how we will teach each grapheme( letter-sound ) step by step. The articles that will teach the grapheme will contain:

  • Tracing worksheet to practice writing the letter while learning its sound.

Phonemes and graphemes shall be taught in two different educational stages. Phonemes are only taught academically in universities and mostly when linguistics and English are the major. Otherwise, graphemes are made to facilitate learning the common sounds of the letters for younger ages and non-specialized learners of the language.
