How to teach ch sound:

We are going to teach kids the ch sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:

1. sound ch story:

Charlie’s father was cleaning his office room when Charlie entered to ask his father for some pocket money to go on a picnic with his mother and aunt. His father had to clean the chair with a towel next to the room door before he gives Charlie the money. the chair was old and hasn’t been used for a while. Once the father put the towel on the chair, a lot of dust came up in the air. Charlie was very allergic to dust and started to sneeze, “chhhhh, chhhhh”. “Father, what is all this dust, chhhhh ,chhhhhh”.

2. ch sound jolly phonics pronunciation:

  • To make the “ch” sound, you need to merge the stop /t/ with the fricative “sh” into one sound.
  • First, slightly open your mouth and push out your lips. 
  • Now, focus on your tongue.
  • Place the tip of your tongue on the alveolar ridge behind your upper front teeth. Just as you do to make the /t/ sound. This way you stop the air. 
  • Now, to release the air, arch your tongue so it’s near the roof of your mouth. The same way as you do when you make the “sh” sound. Make sure that you don’t touch the roof of your mouth and there’s a small gap for the air stream. 
  • When you release the air through this gap, it’ll flow with lots of noise: “ch”.
  • Does that sound like a lot? Don’t worry, let’s watch it again in slow motion.
  • Remember, the “ch” is an affricate sound, so it’s important to completely stop the air and then immediately release it with friction. 
  • Now, let’s try and merge the /t/ and the “sh” sounds together: “ch”, “ch”, “ch”.

  • To make the “ar” sound correctly, focus on pronouncing two sounds and making a smooth connection between them.
  • Start with making the /ɑ/ sound.
  • Open your mouth as wide as possible. Relax your lips and allow them to rest in a neutral position.
  • Now, let’s move your tongue in the correct position for the /ɑ/ vowel.
  • Place your tongue very low in the center of your mouth and make it flat. 
  • The tip of your tongue should be touching the back of your bottom front teeth.
  • Next, connect the /ɑ/ to the /r/ sound with a long gliding movement. 
  • Slightly round your lips. Curl back the tip of your tongue. 
  • Now, slightly lower the center of your tongue and raise its back. Your tongue should be tensed.
