How to teach sh sound:

We are going to teach kids the sh sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:

1. sound sh story:

Once upon a time, there was a lovely mother who has just given birth to a baby. She used to walk with him along the corridor of her house breastfeeding her baby. Every time he cries and she can’t understand the reason, she shakes him mildly saying “sh,…shhh…calm down my little angel”.

• Slightly open your mouth and round your lips. You may push them out a little.
• Now, focus on your tongue. Arch your tongue and raise it to the roof of your mouth, but don’t touch it. Make sure there’s a small gap between them.
• Next, release a stream of air over your tongue.
• When the air flows between the blade of your tongue and the roof of your mouth, it’ll create lots of noise.
• Remember, the fricatives are continuous sounds and so is the “sh” consonant digraph.

How to teach qu sound:

We are going to teach kids the qu sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:

1. sound qu story:

Jimmy loves to play in the garden. Especially, near the pond where the ducks swim and squirrels are climbing the branches of the trees. He loves to feed the ducks bread and gets some nuts for the squirrels who come quickly to eat all of it. The ducks also come quickly quacking to eat the bread from jimmy’s hand. He likes their sound and does like them “qu, qu, qu….”

2. qu sound jolly phonics pronunciation:

• the ‘qu’ consonant cluster, that is, the ‘c’ as in ‘cap’ with the ‘w’ as in ‘will’.
• I know that some people have difficulties with this sound. The key is in the lip position.
• To make the W sound, the lips have to round not just a little, but a lot, so that there’s just a tiny gap there where the lips are not touching.
• When I say the word ‘quick’, notice that my lips have already rounded, quick, before my vocal cords even release the air for the kk sound. Quick.

How to teach ow sound:

We are going to teach kids the ow sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:

1. sound ow story:

a little kid was playing on the beach with a bowl. he filled it with sand and started to build a tower. He put a towel on his shoulders to keep him dry after he had taken a long shower. His mom saw him and knew it’s time for breakfast. So she brought some bread with cheese and went to feed her child. “open your mouth little bunny,..” she said to her kid. Suddenly, something strange happened. A seagull flew so fast above them and got closer in a blink of an eye to steal the cookie bite going into the kid’s mouth. “ow….what is that”, said the mother after the bird has hurt her hand. “ow…I can’t believe the bird stole the cookie”, said the mother angrily.

Pronunciation:

• To make the “ow” digraph correctly, you need to pronounce two sounds and make a smooth connection between them.
• Start with making the “a” sound.
• Open your mouth as wide as possible. Relax your lips and allow them to rest in a neutral position.
• Flatten your tongue and place it very low in your mouth. The tip of your tongue should be touching the back of your bottom front teeth.
• Next, connect the /ɑ/ to the “w” sound.
• Smoothly move your jaw up, until your mouth is almost closed. Then pull the back of your tongue to your throat. 
• The first sound in a diphthong is typically longer and louder. So, make sure that you pronounce a nice and full “a” and then connect it to the “w” sound.
