“give me some”, said Danny talking to Julia while they are setting on the couch watching a movie. He wanted some popcorn as he finished his. “noooooo, I won’t. Those are mine”, she replied. Danny looked back at the TV with a disappointed look and empty fist going back to where it should. Suddenly, they heard a little thin sound of screeching under the sofa like “i, i, i, i”. Julia started to panic. However, Danny was brave enough to look below and see a rat eating one piece of popcorn dropped by Julia. It was his time to tease her now :). “Julia! don’t panic. it’s just a rat” 😈 . You can expect the reaction now lol.

/I/ is one of the English vowels that has two pronunciations. The first one is short like in ‘pin’, ‘tin’ and ‘kin’. The long one is in words like “time”, “dive”, “wine” and light. We are not interested here in the long one as it’s not the main focus of phase two. We also should be very careful in teaching The pronunciation of this sound as it is similar to /e/ sound. One way to remind the child with the difference is to relate the /i/ sound with the thin voice made by the rat.
