free autumn coloring pages for kids

These are the autumn coloring pages I’d put out in the first week of October. A few are simple enough for a three-year-old, some have a whole scene to think about, and the last three are slow and detailed for the child who wants a challenge. There are ten sheets, each one its own PDF, so you can print only what you need.

Autumn coloring pages for preschool

They’re all black line drawings on white paper, so crayons, colored pencils and washable markers all work. The set also comes as one file with a cover page, if you’d rather print everything in one go. I’ve put the pages in order from easiest to hardest.

Easy pages for 3 and 4 year olds

Start here if your child still holds the crayon in a fist. These have big shapes and not much to fill in, so nobody gets stuck halfway.

Autumn doodle page

Nine small pictures to color one at a time: two mugs, a pumpkin, an apple, a leaf, a flower and a couple of treats.

Big pumpkin with falling leaves

One big pumpkin in the middle with oak and maple leaves around it, which makes it a good page for talking about orange, brown and red.

Round bird with two pumpkins

A round, sleepy bird sits among leaves with a pumpkin on either side, all drawn with thick, easy lines.

Scenes for 4 to 6 year olds

These have a background, so there are more decisions to make. What color is the grass? Is it raining or sunny? That’s where the talking starts, and it’s usually the best part.

Two children raking leaves

Two children in knitted hats gather fallen leaves under a big tree, with plenty of small leaves on the ground to fill in.

Unicorn in the pumpkin patch

A unicorn in a little hat stands among the pumpkins, a favorite with children who ask for unicorns on every page.

Fox and hedgehog under the trees

A sleepy fox is curled up on the grass while a hedgehog peeks over the top and leaves drift down.

Wolf costume in the woods

A child in a furry wolf costume walks through dark trees. The heavy border makes it the easiest scene to keep inside the lines.

Detailed pages for older kids

Sharp pencils work better than crayons here. Expect one of these to take a good half hour, and don’t be surprised if it gets finished at home.

Honey jar and autumn fruit

A honey jar with a tiny bee on it, surrounded by apples, pomegranates and flowers, with lots of seeds to color.

Pumpkin house

A pumpkin with a square window and a string of bunting, framed by leafy branches on both sides.

Squirrels on a tree stump

Two squirrels share an acorn on a stump, with swirly patterns on their tails. A slow, quiet page.

Want all ten at once? Here’s the whole set in one file.

Using them with a class

Print on plain paper for crayons. If your class uses markers, slip a spare sheet underneath, because they bleed through. I like to put two or three different pages on the table and let the children choose, since the choosing gets them talking.

Before coloring, take a leaf walk and collect a few real ones. Then children can match what’s in their hand to the leaves on the page and notice that most aren’t green at all. If a child tires halfway through a busy page, fold the paper and let them finish one half. A finished page can go on the wall, and it doesn’t have to be perfect.

More autumn coloring pages

There’s a second set of twelve pages with plainer drawings: a hedgehog with a mushroom, a squirrel eating an acorn, a wheelbarrow of harvest vegetables and a few lettered pages. They suit preschool, kindergarten and first grade, and they’re a good choice for children who find a busy page overwhelming. These four are a taste of the set. The download has a cover page plus eleven sheets.

Questions about these pages

What age are these autumn coloring pages for?

The doodle, pumpkin and bird pages suit ages 3 and 4. The four scenes are for roughly 4 to 6. The honey jar, pumpkin house and squirrel pages are for older children, and plenty of adults like them too.

Do I have to print all of them?

No. Every sheet has its own Download PDF button, so you can print a single page. The full set is there for when you want all ten.

Can I use them in my classroom?

Yes, print them for your own home or classroom. Please don’t sell them or put the files on other websites.

How do I stop a child from rushing through a page?

Pick the page together and talk first: what’s in the picture, what colors would you see outside? Then set a small goal, such as the leaves first and the background later. Short chats like that slow most children down.
