How to teach oa sound:

We are going to teach kids the oa sound through 6 steps. Each step will add a lot of fun and liveliness to the learning time. Let’s see together:

1. sound oa story:

Joan took his coat and went out with his cat to walk around the town. When they came near the town beach, they heard a noise coming out of a small old boat ahead of them. They looked around the boat but saw nothing. “let’s find out what is that baby sound”, he said to his cat. When he came closer and looked inside the boat he found a little goat. “oa…..come here little beautiful kitten. who has put you here, you must be hungry”. The cat licked the little face of the kitten expressing that she loved it. “oa…she is beautiful, let’s take her home”.

2. oa sound jolly phonics pronunciation:

• “oa” is a long “o” vowel sound and it is open rounded like in the words “road, boat, and goat”
• to pronounce the “oa” sound, you should focus on the correct position of your jaw, lips, and tongue.
• Partially open your mouth. Round your lips and make them tense, then pull them in a tighter circle.
• Pull your tongue back and tense it.
• Remember, the “oa” is a tense sound, so your lips and tongue should be very tense. Your jaw should be partially lowered.
• Let’s try saying it: “oa”, “oa”, “oa”.

• First level: Make combinations of the flashcards below and let the child recognize which letters are making the sound “oa”.
• Advanced level: Let the child assemble the words below by himself. keep telling him the pronunciation of the word until he can make the combination alone. 

• The word the kid should make here is “coat”.

Write on the board or on a piece of paper the following table of graphemes. Give the kid some oral words that can only be combined with available graphemes in the table. See how your kid will be able to form a word from.

The teacher/parent here may say :

“boat”

Now the kid has to know how to form the latter word from the table using his listening skills and his knowledge of blending.

after the teacher/parent pronounces the word the kid should arrange the word following the pronunciation he heard.
